Does the new Wordpress version 2.8 work?
It took six month since the last major update of Wordpress, the world leading blog software. After upgrading two of my blogs to the new WP 2.8 i found several things not working anymore. First of all i had to deactivate the plugin “related sites”, i don’t admire having to deactivate interactivity on my blogs! But that wasn’t all. After upgrading i also lost my TinyMCE editor on both blogs – they run different themes – on one theme also found white writing on white background when i was trying to write a new post.

I would recommend to wait a while with upgrading to WordPress 2.8 until all the plugin developers had time to make their adjustments.Installing a new Wordpress instance with WP 2.8 runs without any problem though. The new features are sweet. Selecting and uploading a new theme for your blog has become a piece of cake! Everything is done within the Wordpress installation now! Not so cool is that all plugins went back into one bucket. The niclyseperated active and inactive plugins are already history again. A pity that is!And even less cool is that the possibility to upload and install plugins directly from the computer has been removed!

Still no changes have been made in better readability of the admin section. Light white borders around white cases with white background… Was the color to expensive guys? We all have bad eyes already from sitting in front of a computer! Make the fields more visible please!

Thenew Wordpress Version also shines with better accessibility The authentication mechanism has been improved, so that authentication methods like OpenID and OAuth can cooperate easier with it, without to replace it and then dealing with other issues.

Wordpress 2.8 now also adds feed links automatically to the specific page viewed by a visitor. If, for example, you view the archive of the category Internet Marketing, WP 2.8  automatically adds a feed link for that category. When you view the archive for author McHow2, it adds a feed link for that author and so on, giving it even more interconnectivity.

There is literally a ton of more changes tht have been made to the new Wordpress version and there are many new featured added in 2.8. To not repeat what has been said before, here is a list of all changes and new features of Wordpress 2.8

Besides that I still love the plugin, it seems it is no longer supported by the software developer

Update – 17th November 2008

If your affiliate pro plugin doesn’t work anymore or it causes error messages such as:

“Warning: stripos() [function.stripos]: Offset not contained in string in //yoursite//wp-affiliatepro.php/ bla bla etc…”

go to the wp-affiliate administration panel of your blog and re enter some values like, e.g. how many times the link should be shown on a page and others. These values might have been set back to zero while upgrading to the last Wordpress version. After re saving the values, the plugin should work fine again. Nevertheless, it seems that the plugin is no longer supported by the developers. My support request a while ago, about a different issue, was never answered. visiting their website doesn’t bring any joy either. It seems to be abandoned and the domain has expired :

“NOTICE: This domain name expired on 10/14/2008 and is pending renewal or deletion“

Credits to whom Credits Deserve!

First to say – I love WordPress! It has never been easier working on a website. WordPress designers and developers are all doing a wonderful, job and WordPress is getting better by the day, more beautiful layouted templates are available every day and new Functionality is added with new plug ins on daily bases. Everybody can now built his own website and start adding content within minutes. But… there is a problem that needs to be addressed to the designers as well as the developers of WordPress plug ins:

SEO first than credits! I think every WP blog should have a credit page by default (instead or additional to the about page). Maybe someone will take the time to create a plug in that adds all design and plug in credits automatically to this “credits” page.
But the header of anyones website than your own is no place for advertising!

Developers Please start to acknowledge some basic SEO rules:

• The meta title tag MUST be the first meta tag after the charset tag!
• The meta description tag MUST be the one following the title tag!
• The meta keyword tag MUST be the third one of this trio!

There is no doubt about even Google using the Title tag, so why put it so far down and hide it behind loads of other tags?

All in one SEO is one of the best SEO plug ins there is, but… it places the description tag and the keyword tag far below the rest of the meta tags, and adds TWO Really unnecessary comment tags into the header.

The header of someones website is not the place for egocentric behavior nor product advertising! I love the plug in; but creating an SEO plug in for such a huge community carries some responsibility as well: It should be SEO friendly, at least as far a common knowledge goes.

My comment about this matter on Ueberdose’s blog was answered with “doesn’t matter where the tags are placed as long as they are in the header”, while every serious working SEO manager will tell you otherwise!

I sure hope this will change in the future and we will all have nice and search engine friendly headers in our WordPress blog by default without tweaking plug ins and page headers first. Not everybody is capable of doing this and i get more and more people asking me for help on this. I’d rather be more productive than an SEO repair shop and it would be no problem to change it by default.

The “All in One SEO” Plug-in

Before activating all in one SEO, the description and the keywords meta tags are in the right position. After activating the plug in, both of the tags move down, sometimes the original meta description and keywords tags remain and have to be removed manually from the template header file! It’s not a good idea to have two such tags in the header.
